India’s Two-Wheeler Market Accelerating Ahead

New Delhi, August 2025 — The Indian two-wheeler industry continues to shift gears rapidly, with competing brands jostling for supremacy and electric models carving out a growing share, even as urban demand shows some signs of cooling. Honda Takes the Crown in July August brought a notable shake-up as Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) reclaimed the top spot in July 2025 sales, overtaking long-time leader Hero MotoCorp. Honda reported total unit sales of 5,15,378, including 4,66,331 domestic and 49,047 export units. This marked a 6.2% year-on-year rise and a robust 20% month-on-month jump from June figures.

Hero MotoCorp, despite a strong June showing, slipped to second place with 4,49,755 units sold. TVS, Bajaj, Royal Enfield, and Suzuki also reported healthy growth, though Honda led the rebound. Mixed Trends Across Segments In June 2025, Hero had surged ahead with 5,25,136 units—its highest monthly tally—buoyed by rural demand and seasonal momentum. Meanwhile, Honda had seen a decline that month, selling 3,89,809 units.

Leading individual sellers in June included: Hero Splendor: 2,67,607 units Hero HF Deluxe and Honda CB Shine following closely In scooters: Honda Activa (1,81,948 units), TVS Jupiter, Suzuki Access, and rising interest in the Hero Xoom However, higher-displacement bikes (150–200cc)—popular in urban areas—witnessed a 9% drop in FY25 sales, signaling weaker consumer appetite for premium models amid economic headwinds. Electric Two-Wheeler Market Slows Down The electric segment recorded a downturn in July, with retail sales totaling 1,02,973 units—down 4.35% year-on-year and 2.26% month-on-month. Despite the sluggish trend, TVS iQube held firm at the top with 22,256 units sold, marking a 13.2% YoY growth. Bajaj Chetak also grew 10.8%, while Ather Energy and Hero Vida posted double-digit YoY growth.

However, Ola S1 saw a sharp 57% decline. Outlook Honda’s resurgence in July reshaped brand rankings, putting pressure on Hero to respond with fresh strategies. Hero’s Splendor and Activa remain consistent market leaders in their respective segments. Urban mid-segment slowdown shows changing consumer priorities.

Electric growth uneven, with some models thriving despite subsidy reductions and intensified competition. With upcoming launches and seasonal demand ahead of the festive season, the battle for dominance in India’s two-wheeler market is set to intensify in the coming months.
