KTM 890 Duke R Full specifications and price: KTM 890 Duke R The Beast Unleashed: KTM 890 Duke R Review The Austrian motorcycle giant, KTM, has been making waves in the Indian market with its range of performance-oriented bikes. The latest addition to their lineup is the 890 Duke R, a middleweight naked bike that promises to deliver a thrilling riding experience. As a motorcycle enthusiast, I was excited to get my hands on this beast and see what it's capable of. Engine and Performance At the heart of the 890 Duke R lies a 889cc, parallel-twin engine that pumps out a staggering 119 PS of power at 9,250 rpm and 99 Nm of torque at 7,800 rpm.
This engine is a tweaked version of the one found in the 790 Duke, with changes made to the cylinder head, piston, and crankshaft to increase power output. The result is a bike that accelerates with urgency, reaching 100 km/h from standstill in just 3.2 seconds. The engine's power delivery is incredibly linear, with a smooth and progressive build-up of power throughout the rev range. The 6-speed gearbox is slick and precise, making it easy to shift gears quickly and effortlessly.
The bike's top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h, but I'm sure it would easily surpass that mark if given the opportunity. Design and Ergonomics The 890 Duke R's design is a masterclass in minimalism, with clean lines, sharp angles, and a focus on functionality. The bike's compact dimensions and aggressive stance give it a menacing look, as if it's ready to pounce on the road at any moment. The LED headlight, with its distinctive "split-face" design, is a nod to KTM's off-road heritage.
The rider's triangle is comfortable and well-sorted, with a slightly raised handlebar and a seat height of 834 mm. The footpegs are positioned high and rearward, giving the rider a sporty, upright stance that's perfect for carving up twisty roads. The bike's kerb weight of 180 kg is impressively low, making it easy to flick and maneuver through tight corners. Comfort and Practicality While the 890 Duke R is primarily a performance-oriented bike, it's not all about raw power and speed.
KTM has managed to strike a balance between performance and practicality, making this bike a viable option for daily commuting as well. The seat is surprisingly comfortable, with adequate cushioning and support for both the rider and pillion. The bike's suspension, comprising 43 mm WP upside-down forks and a WP monoshock, is firm but not harsh, soaking up bumps and potholes with ease. The 14-liter fuel tank is decently sized, and the claimed mileage of 21 kmpl is respectable, given the bike's performance capabilities.
However, I managed to extract around 18 kmpl during my test ride, which is still acceptable considering the bike's pace. Riding Experience The 890 Duke R is an absolute hoot to ride, whether you're carving up mountain roads or commuting through city traffic. The bike's chassis is incredibly agile, responding eagerly to every input from the rider. The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tires provide phenomenal grip, even on wet roads, and the bike's ABS system is unobtrusive and effective.
On the open highway, the 890 Duke R is a rocket ship, devouring miles with ease. The engine's power delivery is effortless, and the bike's top speed is quickly reached, even in sixth gear. The bike's handling is equally impressive, with pin-sharp steering and a willingness to change direction quickly. Features and Electronics While the 890 Duke R doesn't boast the most comprehensive electronics package, it still has all the essentials covered.
The bike features a ride-by-wire throttle, traction control, and ABS, as well as a comprehensive instrument cluster that displays a range of information, including speed, gear position, and trip data. However, I was surprised to find that the bike doesn't feature Bluetooth connectivity or a quick shifter, which are becoming increasingly common in this segment. Price and Verdict The KTM 890 Duke R is priced at around ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), which puts it squarely in the middle of the middleweight naked bike segment. While it may not be the most affordable option, the bike's performance, handling, and design make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts.
In conclusion, the KTM 890 Duke R is an exceptional motorcycle that delivers on its promise of providing a thrilling riding experience. With its potent engine, agile chassis, and practical design, this bike is sure to appeal to a wide range of riders. If you're in the market for a performance-oriented naked bike that can handle everything from daily commuting to track days, the 890 Duke R is definitely worth considering.
