Yamaha Preparing New Retro Cafe Racer for India as Demand for Stylish Performance Bikes Grows
BikeRaja News · 12 March 2026
Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha Motor Company is reportedly preparing to introduce a new retro-style café racer for the Indian market. The motorcycle is expected to be based on the popular Yamaha XSR155 platform and could launch in India by 2026, targeting riders who want a combination of classic styling and modern performance. India’s motorcycle market is rapidly evolving as younger riders increasingly look for motorcycles that combine performance with distinctive styling. Retro-inspired motorcycles such as café racers, scramblers and neo-retro roadsters have become particularly popular among enthusiasts who want classic aesthetics with modern technology.
Recognising this growing trend, Yamaha Motor Company is reportedly working on launching a new café racer-style motorcycle for the Indian market. Industry sources suggest that the upcoming model could be based on the Yamaha XSR155, a neo-retro motorcycle that has already gained popularity in several Southeast Asian markets. The bike is known for blending vintage styling cues with modern engineering, making it appealing to riders who appreciate both heritage design and contemporary performance. The motorcycle is expected to feature a retro-inspired design with a round LED headlamp, sculpted fuel tank and minimalist bodywork that reflects traditional café racer styling.
Yamaha’s design philosophy for the XSR series focuses on combining classic motorcycle aesthetics with modern materials and advanced technology. As a result, the upcoming bike could include aluminium components, premium paint finishes and carefully designed details that enhance its retro appeal. Powering the motorcycle is likely to be Yamaha’s 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, the same engine used in performance models such as the Yamaha R15 and Yamaha MT‑15. This engine is known for its strong performance in the entry-level sportbike segment and features Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology that improves power delivery across different engine speeds.
With this engine configuration, the upcoming café racer is expected to produce around 18–19 horsepower, delivering quick acceleration and responsive throttle performance. The engine will likely be paired with a six-speed gearbox and assist-and-slipper clutch, providing smoother gear shifts and improved control during aggressive riding. The motorcycle is also expected to come with several modern features, including a fully digital instrument cluster, LED lighting system and smartphone connectivity. Safety features such as dual-channel ABS and advanced braking systems could also be included to enhance rider confidence and control.
If launched in India, the new Yamaha café racer would compete with several motorcycles in the retro and neo-retro segment. Key competitors may include the Royal Enfield Hunter 350, TVS Ronin and Honda CB350RS. These motorcycles have already established a strong presence in the market by combining classic styling with modern engineering. Motorcycle analysts believe that Yamaha’s entry into this segment could further intensify competition and attract riders looking for a lightweight yet stylish retro motorcycle.
The XSR series has already built a strong global reputation for its unique design and engaging riding experience, and bringing the platform to India could help Yamaha tap into the rapidly growing retro motorcycle segment. Expected Price and Launch Although Yamaha has not officially confirmed the launch timeline, industry reports suggest that the motorcycle could arrive in India by late 2026. The expected price range could be between ₹1.70 lakh and ₹1.90 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a premium option in the 150cc retro motorcycle category.
